Hashimoto disease (also known as Autoimmune Thyroiditis) is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. As a result of this attack, the thyroid becomes inflamed and is unable produce adequate levels of thyroid hormones. This hormone deficiency results in hypothyroidism, or what many people refer to as underactive or low thyroid. Hashimoto’s disease is named after Dr. Hakuru Hashimoto, a Japanese physician who first described it to the medical community in 1912. Video Rating: 5 / 5

I am just trying to spread awareness as part of Thyroid Awareness Month. My name is Nicole, and I am 24 years old. I was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism at 2 weeks old, and has been a struggle my entire life. Throughout my mid-teens until just this past year, my condition was not being treated properly. I attribute this to the lack of information that I had about it growing up. I am a lot more informed now, and I just want to spread the word. I want people to understand how important that children with thyroid disease have parents to advocate for them and know everything that goes along with it. It is so, so important for proper growth and development! Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. iamthefaceofthyroiddisease.org

Courtesy of www.genericforyou.com Hyperthyroidism is the term for overactive tissue within the thyroid gland causing an overproduction of thyroid hormones (thyroxine or “T4″ and triiodothyronine or “T3″). Hyperthyroidism is thus a cause of thyrotoxicosis, the clinical condition of increased thyroid hormones in the blood. It is important to note that hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis are not synonymous. For instance, thyrotoxicosis could instead be caused by ingestion of exogenous thyroid hormone or inflammation of the thyroid gland, causing it to release its stores of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormone is important at a cellular level, affecting nearly every type of tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone functions as a controller of the pace of all of the processes in the body. This pace is called metabolism. If there is too much thyroid hormone, every function of the body tends to speed up. It is therefore not surprising that some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are nervousness, irritability, increased perspiration, heart racing, hand tremors, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, thinning of the skin, fine brittle hair, and muscular weakness—especially in the upper arms and thighs. More frequent bowel movements may occur, but diarrhea is uncommon. Weight loss, sometimes significant, despite a good appetite may occur, vomiting, and, for women, menstrual flow may lighten and menstrual periods may occur less often. Thyroid hormone is critical to normal function of cells. In excess …

www.advancedintegratedhealth.com Most cases of Hypothyroid in America today are misdiagnosed. For most women suffering with this disease the standard playbook goes something like this, simple blood tests are run, an elevated TSH is found and hormone is prescribed. The problem is that after a woman’s “levels” are balanced, she still suffers from a long list of symptoms including fatigue, hot flashes, constipation, depression, hair loss, feeling cold. It is estimated that up to 80% of women who are suffering from Hypothyroid do not have a thyroid problem at all. They are suffering from a condition called Hashimotos disease.
